How children progress when primary schools reopen: An analysis of autumn 2020 test results

  • Compared to test results from the beginning of the autumn term, there was considerable closing of attainment gaps relative to previous cohorts.
  • Despite this, current cohorts remained more than a month behind in reading and maths and two months behind in GPS. Pupil Premium-eligible children were six months behind their peers.
  • Younger years were impacted more than older age groups. Schools with high levels of economic deprivation were affected roughly twice as badly, and scores fell more steeply in the midlands and the north than in the south.
  • We also find complex interactions between the deprivation status of pupils, schools and local areas, with Pupil Premium children in relatively affluent schools and non-Pupil Premium children in more deprived areas falling further behind than their peers.

  • Relevant: They should signify something that people actually care about
  • Real: The underlying data need to be available for all or most schools
  • Reliable: The numbers must be credible and consistent across schools

  1. Why not 1-100? Because there are around 3,300 schools, each of which is assigned a non-integer percentile value that is then rounded up or down to the nearest whole number, including zero. This detail may change in future versions.
